A bicycle tour away from the main roads

Lake Lucerne is the fourth largest lake in Switzerland, Lake Constance and Lake Geneva, covering 114 km². With its many "arms", the length of the shore is relatively long in relation to the lake area, at about 150 km. This allows countless bicycle tours on Lake Central Switzerland, some of which are combined with return trips by boat. The trip around the Horw peninsula with the best views of Pilatus, Stanserhorn and Rigi is one of them.

At Lucerne railway station we start this panoramic tour in the immediate vicinity of the city. To the right along the tracks we take the Zentralstrasse to the Bundesplatz (there is one not only in Bern). After crossing the roundabout, we turn left into Neustadtstrasse and again along the tracks to the "Freigleis", the former track of the Brünigbahn. We now follow this ingenious highway for cyclists and pedestrians to the barracks. Since the construction of the railway tunnel and the new line of the Zentralbahn under the Allmend, the old railway line is no longer needed. Attention: 500m after the barracks, turn left shortly to get to Horw on the left side of the station Mattenhof between the lovingly tended allotment gardens. Follow the roads to the south, and finally take the cantonal road in the direction of the lake and the Winkel lido. For those who are already after a cooling off, this is the first opportunity.

Always very close to the water, after three kilometres we reach the Seehotel Kastanienbaum with restaurant on the shores of Lake Lucerne. A little later, in the public park of Villa Krämerstein, it is worthwhile to take a bath in absolutely picturesque surroundings. Freshly strengthened, we enjoy the constant ups and downs as the tour continues. The imposing villas form an impressive contrast to the agricultural areas and farms along the road. Passing the Schönbühl shopping centre we come to the last small climb, on the top of which is the Richard Wagner Museum. On the following descent, don't miss the turnoff to the right! Because at the "Ufschötti" there is a last, excellent opportunity to cool off in Lake Lucerne - not far from Lucerne railway station, the end of the 16km long round trip.
