Picturesque alpine meadows, tranquil turquoise mountain lakes, steep peaks and tranquil villages in summer - ideal for hiking! Snow-covered slopes, kilometres of cross-country ski trails and countless wellness options in winter - perfect for winter sports! The Tannheim Valley in the northern tip of Tyrol and bordering the Allgäu Alps is considered one of the most beautiful high valleys in Europe. And a top address for gourmets and wellness enthusiasts.
If you can do without pomp and ostentation, this is the place for you. Super-modern express gondolas, all-night parties on the mountain? Not a chance. In the Tannheimer Tal, the clocks seem to go a little slower. Tourism is gentler, the cable cars smaller, the valley floor wide and the alpine meadows rise moderately. Ideal for a deceleration holiday in summer or winter - for example at the Wellness & Geniesser Hotel at Haldensee.
A four-star hotel in a prime location with a magnificent view of Lake Halden and cuisine that makes gourmets' hearts beat faster. This is where Michaela Gleirscher fulfilled her dream of owning her own hotel in 2019. Guests appreciate the tranquillity and the uncomplicated and pleasant atmosphere at the Wellnesshotel Haldensee. Excellent food, always friendly service and a wide range of wellness offers - this is how you attract real bon vivants. And on top of that, a good starting point for all kinds of activities in the Tannheimertal valley, which was probably settled by people from the Ostrachtal valley from the 13th century onwards. Today, the 1,100-metre high valley in the Tannheim Mountains in the north of the Austrian province is a popular holiday region. While in winter there are cross-country ski trails throughout the valley, in summer there are plenty of cycling and hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty to tempt you into the Tannheimer Tal - thanks to the wide valley floor, spoiled by the sun in summer and winter.
In summer, the gondola ride to the Neunerköpfle and the hike to a special attraction in the valley entice you: the largest summit book in the Alps - three metres high and with two pages, each 2.3 metres wide. If you want, you can immortalise yourself in the summit book with a saying.
Or not far from the hotel and above the Haldensee lake, which can be reached by cable car or on foot, the oversized sun panorama hat awaits guests young and old. The oak hat, which weighs 880 kilos and is almost three metres high, turns like a merry-go-round and offers space for 18 people on its brim - including a magnificent 360-degree panorama.
The "Highline 179" near Reutte has made it into the Guinness Book of Records. At 406 metres, it is the longest cable suspension bridge in the world and connects the Ehrenberg ruins with Fort Claudia - 114 metres above the flowing traffic on the Fernpass road.
A beautiful excursion destination in summer as well as in winter is a visit to the Vilsalpsee. In winter, you walk across the frozen Haldensee to the small village of the same name. Once there, the trail runs at medium altitude with a great view all the way to Tannheim. Now it's not far to the picturesque lake. Alternatively, you can hop on the Alpenexpress, a small tourist train, and be driven to the Visalpsee for little money.
The Tannheimer Tal is also perfect for a long weekend or a winter sports holiday in winter. If you are into skiing circus, you are wrong here, but you can still ski in several small skiing areas. However, the Tannheimer Tal is particularly suitable for ski tours, cross-country skiing on kilometre-long trails and for winter hikes - with or without snowshoes - with a view of mountains and frozen lakes - with hut stops, of course! The most beautiful winter hiking trail takes you on a good two kilometres of well-prepared path around the summit of the already mentioned Neunerköpfle through the wintry mountain landscape at 1900 metres - with wonderful views in all directions! If you like, you can borrow a pair of hiking poles or snowshoes, including maps, free of charge at the Wellnesshotel Haldensee. The Neunerköpfle is also a great place for skiing, and if you fancy a bird's eye view of the Tannheim Valley, book a tandem paragliding flight. Winter can be so beautiful!
Another varied winter hiking trail leads you directly from the hotel up to the Adlerhorst mountain hut, from where you also have a great panoramic view of the valley. Be sure to try the Kaiserschmarrn and the homemade ham sandwiches!
If you like it a bit faster, we recommend a toboggan ride on the opposite side of the valley. The chairlift takes you up to the Krinnenalpe and then back down to the valley on a 3.5-kilometre-long prepared toboggan run. Pure fun! And another tip for animal lovers: above the village of Zöblen, majestic deer can be observed from a sheltered hideout, visiting a feeding place late in the afternoon in winter. A great experience!
If you would like to include a trip to Germany, no problem. The historic town of Füssen with good shopping opportunities and the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle can be reached in just over half an hour.
Whether in summer or winter: What could be better than relaxing in the warm whirlpool or sauna after hiking or cross-country skiing? Steam bath, salt grotto, bio and Finnish sauna, heated infinity pool with an unobstructed view of the lake, Kneipp bath and spacious relaxation rooms with large panoramic windows - the wellness area is generously laid out - cosmetic and massage treatments can also be booked - and with all these pampering packages you simply forget the time.
You will also be pampered with culinary delights. Breakfast and lunch buffet, coffee and cake in the afternoon and a 4-course menu in the evening complete the soothing time-out at Haldensee.
